One summer, amidst the endless expanse of Brokeback Mountain, the cowboys Ennis and Jack meet. They herd sheep, ride through the barren landscape, and grow closer and closer. Then they spend a night together. Alone and surrounded by the vast wilderness of Brokeback Mountain, they feel unnoticed and free. Then a cold snap hits, and Jack and Ennis drift into different lives with wives and children; they don’t see each other for five long years until they visit one another and begin meeting twice a year. They draw strength from the memories of that one summer on Brokeback Mountain to sustain them through the rest of their lives, which they have missed out on together. Until Jack is too incautious and pays with his life, leaving only Ennis behind—in a time when men who love men often remained lonely.
