What is a “cat lady”? A woman who lives a lonely, solitary life and therefore surrounds herself with four-legged friends? In and around Oberhausen, director Julia Roesler and dramaturge Silke Merzhäuser of werkgruppe2 met seventeen real-life “cat ladies.” Women over 70—perhaps single, perhaps divorced, perhaps widowed—who live with pets. Are they affected by poverty in old age? By loneliness? Who do they care for, and who cares for them? How do they look back on their lives and their decades of work? And were they rewarded for this, or did it remain unseen? Based on the interview material, a theatrical evening featuring actors and a live musician has been created, exploring the life choices, life’s joys, and the big questions of life faced by real cat ladies.
