Men who drink liquor cause trouble – and men who drink beer are harmless. That’s what Motte learnt from her mother, and she should know. Because Motte’s father drinks too. Just like her grandfather before him, and indeed all the men in Motte’s family. When her father can no longer make it to work sober, he loses his job. Caught in a spiral of shame, the family begins a slow but steady descent into social decline.
Later in life, Motte herselfs drinks heavily with her partner. She spirals further and further, until there is almost nothing left to lose. When her father falls terminally ill, Motte faces a double process of letting go; from this man who has made her life so difficult and whom she nevertheless loves – and from alcohol.

In Lena Schätte’s novel, a touching portrayal of a complex father-daughter relationship takes shape through fractured fragments of memory.

Katharina Bill is a director, performer and specialist in working with non-professional actors. In her production, people from Oberhausen and the surrounding area lend their voices to Motte, her family, and the lived reality of addiction.
