A jug was broken in Eve’s room one night. A trial is held in the small village of Huisum, and it gradually becomes clear that Judge Adam himself broke into Eve’s room, sexually assaulted her, and fled—breaking the jug in the process. Yet the judge refuses to take responsibility for his actions. And then Eve speaks. Heinrich von Kleist’s text, over 200 years old, reads as highly relevant today, in an era of internationally visible trials regarding systems of abuse by men against women and in the wake of #MeToo. At the same time, Kleist’s vivid characterization, his situational comedy, and his precise wordplay captivate the reader. Yet beneath the surface, existential questions emerge: How can justice be fought for when even the judge himself has no interest in addressing the issue?
