Diversity is our Home’ – these words light up the Oberhausen night sky in neon colours. But what do they mean?
The band Doyçland embarks on a search for clues through music, exploring the songs of the people who were drawn to us by coal, steel and recruitment agreements from the 1960s onwards, those who came here from Spain, Greece, the former Yugoslavia and Turkey to graft.
Songs by Cem Karaca, Juan Molina and Gülcan Opel tell the tale of Germany as a foreign land, incorporating longing, homesickness and disappointment about the broken promise of a ‘golden’ future. For all their quiet and melancholy moments, however, they also celebrate the life and the sense of community while appealing for peaceful coexistence.

In this evening of songs, director Caner Akdeniz sends us on a musical journey from the economic miracle of West Germany to the present day. Together with fictional band Doyçland, he revisits the songs of the migrant workers and arranges them in the form of an oratorio. With the songs, he uses music to explore terms such as identity, culture and origin, while showing us the pain points in recent German history. Doyçland is an oratorio of forgotten songs and a discography of a people separated from their homelands.
