People throwing themselves to the ground in surrender. Mouths agape, voices shrill. Ecstasy. Tears. Bliss and pain. Interspersed with human fates, dreams and the hope of salvation. Every Sunday, the suffering, fears and trauma are forgotten – as on a pulpit raised high above the crowd, a priest stands exalted and speaks to his flock as the self-proclaimed powerful voice of God. His gaze is stern yet content. His words of sin, impurity and guilt – and the just, divine punishment of ‘Black folk’ – echo in the space. The community sings, claps and dances with joy. Powerful men and obedient women completely devoted to their faith. Among them an adolescent Black man, who fears for himself and his soul’s salvation – and yet longs so intensely to belong.
In these moments, the Church of Africa seems to brim with divine strength, far away from the non-believers and sinners outside. Yet there is also fear, despair and pain in the eyes of the parishioners: fear that they themselves may be found to have sinned, despair of being abandoned by God and the pain of being at the mercy of this world. Deciding at that moment to raise his voice, the young man ignites an uncontrollable fire.

In PREACH, the public is part of a large Mass in which brute force is unleashed amidst danced worship and a euphoric gospel choir. Inspired by the work of James Baldwin, the first production of the new Urban Arts department at the Grosses Haus theatre addresses the fanatical structures within African religious communities. Kwame Osei, Kama Frankl-Gross and Christopher Deutsch join with the ensemble in examining the tension between the longing for community and security on the one side and control, corruption, manipulation and violence on the other.
