Im März 1943 fuhr unter der deutschen Besatzung der r erste Zug aus Thessaloniki nach Auschwitz. Bis August wurden 50.000 Juden deportiert und 96 % der jüdischen Gemeinde der Stadt Thessaloniki in den Konzentrationslagern der Nazis vernichtet. Die größte jüdische Gemeinde auf dem Balkan, die der Stadt einst den Titel „Mutter Israels“ einbrachte, wurde von der Landkarte getilgt, während sich eine neue soziale und wirtschaftliche Elite herausbildete. Der zurückgelassene Besitz ging in die Hände von Treuhändern über, Möbel und Gebrauchsgegenstände landeten in christlichen Häusern und Geschäften, die Marmorplatten des alten jüdischen Friedhofs wurden an den ungewöhnlichsten Orten der Stadt aufgestellt.
Wer leistete Widerstand und wer beteiligte sich an der Gewalt? Welche Mechanismen waren Teil der unterdrückten und vergessenen Erinnerung an die Jüdinnen und Juden von Thessaloniki – und welche Rolle spielte das Theater?
Inwiefern ist die Geschichte für uns heute wichtig, um uns eine Zukunft vorzustellen?
In dem Versuch, sich dieser Zeit kritisch zu nähern, spricht das künstlerische Team um Prodromos Tsinikoris mit Gästen aus der Vergangenheit, der Gegenwart und der Zukunft Thessalonikis und entwirft so ein neues Bild dieser „Stadt der Geister“.
Die Dokumentartheater-Performance 96% erschafft eine Archäologie unserer Gegenwart. Auf der Suche nach den Geschichten in der Geschichte recherchierte das Team nicht nur in Archiven zu den Verbrechen der deutschen Besatzung, sondern auch vor Ort im heutigen Thessaloniki, auf den Straßen der Stadt, in längst geschlossenen Geschäften, in der alten und neuen Architektur der Stadt – und sogar im Nationaltheater Nordgriechenlands selbst.
Die Produktion entstand im Rahmen des Projekts „Landscapes of Devastation“ in Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Nationaltheater Nordgriechenlands NTNG (Thessaloniki), der Schaubühne (Berlin) und La Joven (Madrid).
„96%“ wurden von der Stiftung EVZ (Erinnerung, Verantwortung, Zukunft) gefördert und mit TooFarEast Productions koproduziert.

Documentary Theatre by Prodromos Tsinikoris & Team
In March 1943 the first train to Auschwitz left from Thessaloniki, under the German occupation. By August, 50,000 Jews were deported and 96% of the city’s Jewish community exterminated in the Nazi concentration camps. The largest Jewish community in the Balkans, which once gave the city the title “Mother of Israel”, was wiped off the map while a new social and economic elite emerged. The property they left behind passed into the hands of escrow agents; furniture and utensils ended up in Christian homes and shops, the marble slabs of the old Jewish cemetery were placed in the most unlikely places in the city.
Who resisted and who joined the violence? How were the mechanisms of memory suppression constructed and what is the role of theatre? How is this history of interest to us now and how does it relate to our own future? In an attempt to critically approach a bygone era, the artistic team around Prodromos Tsinikoris talks with guests from the past, the present and the future of Thessaloniki and presents the findings of its research to compose a new historical and social mural of this “city of ghosts”.
The performance-documentary, attempting an archaeology of the present, searched for these stories, not only in studies, archives and testimonies, but also through on-site research in today’s Thessaloniki, in the streets, in closed shops, in old and new buildings, even in the National Theatre of Northern Greece itself.
The production was produced in the framework of the project „Landscapes of Devastation“ as collaboration between the National Theatre of Northern Greece (Thessaloniki), the Schaubühne (Berlin) and La Joven (Madrid). It was funded by the German EVZ Foundation (Memory, Responsibility, Future), and co-produced with TooFarEast Productions.
